LITERATURE ON TRIAL: THE ODYSSEY OF ULYSSES

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 24 2018 at 05:30 pm

Location: Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, LLP, 425 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY

Today, James Joyce's novel Ulysses is regarded as a classic work of literature. But when the book first appeared, it was the subject of two important obscenity prosecutions - a criminal case against the publishers of the magazine in which the story was first published, and later a forfeiture proceeding that went to the Second Circuit. The Ulysses litigations raised important legal issues about the law of obscenity, which was enforced far more vigorously in the early twentieth century than it is today. The cast of characters includes Learned and Augustus Hand, Bennett Cerf, Morris Ernst, James Joyce, and others. This program, the tenth consecutive one presented by the Historical Team, promises to be both entertaining and informative.
