Cocktails: 5:30 pm
Program: 6:30 pm to 8:00pm
This program centers on a war crimes trial arising out of events
in Sierra Leone in which our own Robert Herbst was the prosecutor.
The tribunal was established jointly by the United Nations and
Sierra Leone. The judge was from Ireland; the leading defense
attorney from the United Kingdom; the prosecutor from New York; the
defendants and other defense counsel from Sierra Leone; and the
appeal from the judgments of conviction were heard and decided in
the Hague. The program will explore the difficulties presented by a
tribunal so composed, and a trial conducted by attorneys from such
different legal backgrounds. At the end of the trial, you the
members of the Inn will be asked to decide whether the Irish judge
ruled properly on key issues (attorney/client privilege having been
one of them) and whether defendants were guilty. See you
there.
