The race is on, the debates are brewing, the advertisements are
flowing, and the election is near. Elections are key to our
democratic way of life and our elections are only as good and as
valid as the people's confidence in them. Besides all of the other
obstacles to a free government are any obstacles to fair and free
voting. This year has seen an onslaught of battles in key states
directed at restrictive laws threatening access to the voting
booth. Those in favor of the laws claim they are necessary to
prevent voter fraud. Those against them claim they are
discriminatory and interfere with the voting process.
