  • Jan. 17, 2023 (Zoom Webinar) - Ethics Part 1 - Historical Considerations "The Development of Modern Legal Ethics" - What are the origins of "modern American" legal ethics?  Why were they developed in the first place? What did professionalism look like for Gus?  Perhaps it is to address conflicts inherent in being a lawyer, for, on the one hand, lawyers are members of a professional vocation in which money is the reward for good work. On the other hand, lawyers are business owners for whom the pursuit of money is the purpose of the work itself.  How do we reconcile the tension between these two seemingly conflicting aims? Can we be both public servants and successful business owners?  
  • February 21, 2023 (Zoom Webinar) - Ethics Part 2 - “TikTok on the Clock: The Pitfalls of TikTok Lawyering”TikTok is a popular social media platform and phone app that allows users to create, watch, and share short videos, typically lasting between 15 seconds and several minutes. Over the past few years, TikTok has exploded in popularity and is now used by over 100 million people in the U.S. and close to 1 billion people worldwide. Given the massive audiences that TikTok provides, TikTok content creators are no longer just amateur videographers creating silly music and dance videos. They now include lawyers and other professionals who use TikTok to disseminate advice, advertise services, and grow a list of loyal followers. This program will focus on the legal pitfalls and ethical dilemmas TikTok lawyers inevitably face when they cross legal services with social media.
