Civility Month—Practicing law with civility provides benefits to the Bar, the Bench, and those seeking justice or relief in the courts. While an important aspect of general legal professionalism, civility has also been tied closely to the health and well-being of practitioners. Bring awareness to this American Inns of Court ideal by sharing your civility story or advice, exploring civility-focused programs in the Program Library to present at an Inn meeting, or exploring educational content about civility. Civility in the Practice of Law Certificate Course—Learn pragmatic ways to incorporate and apply civility into your practice starting with the role civility has played throughout history and its continued relevance. You’ll review challenges to civility in modern practice, including the connection to lawyer well-being; the value of including civility in civics education; and the relationship between civility and public confidence in the courts. You’ll also explore whether mandating civility as a requirement for practicing law is a net positive. Learn more and register at www.innsofcourt.org/CivilityCertificate.

Pegasus Scholarship—The Pegasus Scholarship Trust is an exchange program wherein young American Inn of Court members visit London for six weeks to learn about the English legal system and young English barristers visit the United States for six weeks to learn about the American legal system. While details of the program differ each year, the scholarship is designed to provide an intensive, six-week introduction to the English legal system. Pegasus scholars spend the majority of their time in barristers’ chambers as well as observing trials or arguments in action. Members of the American Inns of Court admitted to the bar for at least two years but not more than seven years are encouraged to apply by January 27, 2025. Find out more at www.innsofcourt.org/PegasusScholarships.

What role should bar associations play in improving the administration of justice? Do bar associations provide an effective conduit between the bench and the bar? How have you effectively used your bar association membership to improve the practice of law? How do the roles of bar associations and Inns intersect, and what can each learn from the other? Visit www.innsofcourt.org/BencherSubmissions for details on how to submit an article.
